What Is A Breast Biopsy?

A breast biopsy is a diagnostic procedure to evaluate suspicious breast tissue. It involves extracting a small tissue sample for lab examination, typically after abnormalities are detected in imaging or physical exams. Radiologists perform the procedure using imaging technology and a thin needle, with local anesthesia for comfort. These biopsies are crucial for early detection and diagnosis, guiding healthcare providers in determining appropriate actions.

What to Know About Breast Biopsies

Understanding the breast biopsy process can help alleviate concerns and prepare you for the procedure. Here’s what you can expect before, during, and after your biopsy at our facility.

What to expect

A skilled radiologist will perform your biopsy using advanced imaging technology. You’ll be positioned based on the biopsy type—seated for stereotactic or lying down for ultrasound-guided. The area will be numbed with local anesthesia. The radiologist will extract small tissue samples using a thin needle. You may feel pressure but shouldn’t experience sharp pain. A tiny metal clip may be placed to mark the biopsy site. The procedure typically takes 30-60 minutes, and you’ll go home the same day.

After your exam

The biopsy site will be covered with surgical tape strips and an ice pack. Manage any discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers and ice. Avoid strenuous activities for 48 hours. You can shower the next day, being gentle around the biopsy site. Leave surgical tape strips in place for 5-7 days. Expect results within 3-5 business days. Our team is here to support you and answer any questions throughout the process.
