What Is a Dialysis Fistulagram?
A dialysis fistulagram is an imaging procedure used to evaluate the patency and function of a dialysis fistula.
During the procedure, a small amount of contrast material is injected into the fistula using a thin, flexible tube (catheter) that is inserted into the fistula through a small puncture in the skin. X-ray images are then taken to visualize the fistula and the blood vessels that are connected to it. The radiologist will evaluate the images to ensure that the fistula is patent (open) and that blood is flowing properly through it.
The fistulagram is a non-invasive procedure and it is done to assess the fistula before the first hemodialysis session, after any surgical intervention, or if there are any signs of malfunctioning.
